The success story of the International Conference on Archaeology, History and Heritage 2019 – (ICAHH 2019)

The International Conference on Archaeology, History and Heritage (ICAHH 2019) was on 14th –   15th March 2019 in Habarana, Sri Lanka under the theme “New Perspectives in Global Heritage Studies”. The conference was organized by The International Institute of Knowledge Management (TIIKM), Sri Lanka in collaboration with Department of History and Archaeology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka as the Hosting Partner and University of Jammu,
India as the academic partner to the conference.

ICAHH 2019 created a great platform for archaeologists, historians, researchers, scientists, academicians, industry experts and policy makers to share the knowledge related to Archaeology, History and Heritage. Through diverse researches and case studies from all over the world, the conference brought together participants from around the world in parallel sessions with many networking opportunities.

Inauguration Ceremony

The opening remarks of ICAHH 2019 were made by the Conference Chair Prof. Anura Manatunga (Senior Professor in Archaeology, Department of Archaeology, Director of the Centre for Heritage Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka) together with Mr. Isanka P. Gamage (Managing Director, The International Institute of Knowledge Management) while Prof. Prashantha Bandula Mandawala (Director General of Archaeology, Department of Archaeology, Sri Lanka) was the Chief Guest of this special occasion.

KEYNOTE FORUM

The Keynote forum was one of the significant features of the Conference and it was enlightened by four (04) renowned speakers in the Archaeology field. The first day of keynote speeches were delivered by Prof. Vasant Shinde (Vice-Chancellor of Deccan College, India) under the title “Relevance of the Study of Ancient Heritage to the Contemporary Society: A Case Study from India” and Dr. K.N. Dikshit (President of The Indian Archaeological Society, India) under the title “Mansooon and Urbanisation in South Asia”.

The second day keynote speeches were delivered by Dr. Siran Upendra Deraniyagala (Former Director-General of Archaeology, Sri, Lanka) under the title “The Antecedents of Sri Lanka’s Historical Heritage” and Prof. Anura Manatunga (Senior Professor in Archaeology, Department of Archaeology, Director of the Centre for Heritage Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka) under the title “Some Aspects on Vandalizing and Trading of Antiquities”.

ICAHH 2019 provided a great platform for eminent researchers and policy makers from across the globe to share their research findings with one another and to discuss the policy implications. The conference provided a refreshing experience for all. Through diverse researches and case studies from all over the world, the conference witnessed participation from various countries including Sri Lanka, Russia, Pakistan, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Israel and United Kingdom.

Panel Discussion on “State Formation and Transformation in South Asia”

The Panel Discussion on “State Formation and Transformation in South Asia” happened on the second day of the International Conference on Archaeology, History and Heritage 2019 which was moderated by Prof. Anura Manatunga, Senior Professor in Archaeology, Department of Archaeology, Director of the Centre for Heritage Studies, University of Kelaniya. The participants were able to listen to archaeology experts, debate and discuss archaeological discoveries, experience the modern life and research in South Asia, and build the knowledge of South Asian cultures. Field Visits

ICAHH 2019 offered memorable experiences to all participants of the Conference to explore the UNESCO heritage sites of Sri Lanka. The conference participants had a great time while discovering ancient cities namely Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura.  The participants were able to explore the renovated monuments, restored edifices, preserved ruins and historical sites where the archeological excavations which are still being continued in these area. There was a special discussion with site experts to enhance knowledge throughout these visits.
